Through the twilight forest come scampering a beetle faerie and a rather clumsy woodland sprite .....

This is my first ever digital painting, so please be gentle!
This is 95% painted in Painter IX using a Wacom Intuos, with some initial self-designed Poser figures as a starting point.
The figures were originally conceived in Poser 7 using morphs, but I only rendered some very basic bare figures just as a guide to get the general anatomy and poses right, as I'm still finding my way with figure sketching. All the figure detail is overpainted and pretty much nothing of the original renders remain.
Everything else is painted from scratch in Painter IX. I used various charcoal, acrylic, air and oil brushes in Painter, though the majority was done with a soft charcoal brush. Also lots of blending with the good old Just Add Water brush. I switched into Photoshop right at the end for some final texturing and levels adjustments.
There's a narrative to the picture which I may add at some point, but hopefully the image is strong enough to tell the story itself.
This looks SO good! It needs more exposure ASAP in my opinion. The colors, the expressions, everything is just awesome. A few things that stand out to me right away:
- Both of their hair, especially the one in the foreground, is gorgeous.
- The detail on the wings and on the foreground-one's body, as well as the detail in the grass, is great.
- I just noticed the spooky eyes...creepy!
- The almost-everywhere fog was a great inclusion, it makes the whole piece look very dream-like and not-of-this-world.
- The glow of the dropped lamp illuminating it's surroundings is amazing, great job on that.
So basically, very good job on this, definitely a

Excellent work and added as a Fave.
One thing I might change is the egg, it kinda get's lost on the guy as it's roughly the same colour and tone, maybe add a little bit more light and a slight colour change so it stands out a little. Otherwise excellent work, I wish I could do something this good on my first painting foray!
Im thinking of making the move to tablet...but i cant really draw well (im not horrible, but i would not for istance be able to draw something like this) on paper... how well do you draw?
Im going to fav and watch you.. your image has some mood that alot of these painted images lack!
excellent start mate ! ...for a first it is beyond reproach. You already exude a unique style which is vital...not to mention imagination

I don't draw that well on paper, I'm not terrible but I rarely do more than basic idea sketches. Partly this is because I'm always erasing and correcting stuff and multiple undo is too addictive to give up! And also because I actually prefer to use a tablet as it suits the fact I like to sketch / paint with a minimum of pen pressure so I can set up the tablet just as I like it. If you're thinking of getting a tablet my advice would be to go for it, you may find (as I did) that a tablet liberates you. Thanks for the kind words!
